Hugo, sending a line carving round the block

This week I decided to move directly forward from Gavin, last weeks object, and use the same kind of technique in line carving but reverse the colour and send it around the block.

Such a simple idea works really well and moving forwards I can see a lot of ways this could go.

Gavin, a line carving

I don’t know why Friday surprises me every week, I suppose its the same principle with which Christmas jumps up and surprises people every December. The early part of the week passes quite slowly and Wednesday onwards just flies past, I get caught up in the work that I am doing and fitting other stuff in gets quite difficult. Some days there are just not enough hours in the day! Although for many people I know this is not a new suggestion.

I am discovering that I am using this Cunning Plan project to test out techniques that I am considering for other projects, so in a way my work is more interconnectedthan I originally thought.

Gavin - a line carving

Gavin a line carving, jelutong with blue wood dye

Gavin is this weeks object and he is a line carving, the wood is Jelutong and the blue colour is blue wood dye. This technique is something I have been playing with for a little while and I’m not 100% sure what I think of it just yet. I am trying to decide whether I should attempt a carving with a lot more line etc in it making it more like a sketch than a carving, I could also look into adding texture/shade in th

e same way that you would in a line drawing. I find it also reminds me of a printing plate for some reason, or even a very simple monoprint or etching plate.

I am also enjoying playing with the blue wood dye I have (currently I only have blue as you might be able to tell from the last couple of objects! At some point I may get some other colours though I also use paints on the wood so that provides many other colours but also a different effect). So far I have only used the dye on Jelutong which is a light coloured wood and the dye colour shines out really well, I think it may be time to try the dye out on some other woods, Oak and Poplar maybe.

Francis an object of many pieces

This week has been a little odd, I spent Monday to Wednesday off work as I was ill and then just as I was ready to go back to work on Thursday it snowed heavily overnight and we couldn’t get out of the house or get the van off of the drive even though the drive is flat!!

I managed to get the drive cleared late Thursday and got to work this morning, the first time all week!

I didn’t have much time to think about what I wanted to do with this weeks object or that long to make it but I was determind to get an object made and not fall behind!

Thinking about Erich – last weeks object – somehow put me in mind of pieces of object coming together to make a whole. I decided to cut out a relatively thin starting profile, cut it into pieces and then put them onto a back board in an elongated version of the original profile. Painting the MDF background blue just happened as that was the paint handy at the time.

I’m not too sure what I think of this yet, I need a little more time to digest it.

I feel that it might lead onto more sculptural three dimensional pieces made from lots of small pieces joined somehow, I’m not quite sure yet.
